Street Musician Day - May 2, 2009 On the first Saturday in May thousands of people go out to the streets to play music. Street Musician Day is the event which unites all who speak the world's most universal language - the language of music. In response to the invitation from musician and actor Andrius Mamontovas, professional and amateur musicians flood into the streets, yards, parks and squares of Vilnius. Armed with a variety of musical instruments, they play rock, classics, jazz, avant-garde and folklore and beat African rhythms. On this day all Lithuanian cities and towns engage into the fest of free creation and socialising between musicians and the public. In 2007, 295 groups obtained permits to play on the streets and Street Musician Day involved about 600 street-players. In 2008, Street Musician Day erupted all across Lithuania with more than 3,000 musicians playing in the capital and 31 other cities and towns. Street Musician Day in 2009 will involve Lithuanians living all over the world playing jazz, rock, classics, rhythms and folk music out on the streets. Fest initiator |
